Preparing for an Eyelid Lift

You will begin your preparations for eyelid lift surgery with an initial consultation with Dr. Horn. This consultation is a chance for you to get to know each other better, and to ask whatever questions you have about your procedure and his methods.

What should I Expect During Blepharoplasty Recovery?

About a week after the procedure, we will remove your stitches in our office. Swelling is normal after surgery but most patients are back to their normal daily routine in about a week. After two weeks the majority of bruising and swelling will be gone. For the first few nights after surgery, we advise sleeping in an elevated position to reduce swelling. This can be accomplished by adding a few extra pillow beneath your head and upper body. Applying cold packs to the eyes can greatly reduce bruising and swelling in the days following surgery. Physical activity should be reduced for two weeks after the procedure as swelling heals.

When will I see my blepharoplasty results?

After your eyelid lift, your eyes will appear noticeably more youthful and energetic. While there will be swelling and likely some blurry vision for the first few days, you’ll begin to see results appear as the swelling goes down. Within the first week or two following surgery, you’ll see your results begin to emerge.

Can you watch TV after blepharoplasty?

After blepharoplasty, you will want to avoid screen time for the first day or two. This includes TV and cell phone use. You’ve just had surgery and will want to let your eyes heal and adjust. You’ll also likely experience some mild blurriness to your vision after surgery. While this is normal, it is important to give your body the time and space to heal, rather than encourage further strain by focusing on screens.

Once your eyes adjust and you feel comfortable, you can ease into screen time as you progress through your recovery. Listen to your body, and try not to push yourself too fast. Your eyes will tell you when you need to take a break.

Most patients are able to resume work and return to normal activities within 10-14 days of surgery. However, you should avoid strenuous activities that increase your blood pressure for two to three weeks after your surgery.

How do you sleep after a blepharoplasty?

It is important to sleep on your back following surgery, for at least the first few weeks. Prop up your head on a pillow or two to encourage healing and reduce swelling. Dr. Horn will also provide you with detailed instructions on how to minimize your recovery time, including sleep instructions. Follow Dr. Horn’s instructions and be sure to give yourself plenty of space to rest.

When can I wear mascara after blepharoplasty?

You will want to avoid eye makeup for at least the first couple of weeks after surgery. Your eyes will be more sensitive than normal, and applying makeup to the eyelid can interrupt the healing process and result in more swelling.
